Exmoor may be a second tier label but nothing is done to a lesser measure at Xanadu. All vines are closely managed to yield fruit at full physiological maturity and complete tannin ripeness, for wines which are brimming with profound Margaret River regionality. The essential Margaret River Cabernet in epic Medoc styling, solid and statuesque, reflecting the intensity of fruit flavours that flourish within the rich, free draining gravel soils of the vineyard. Xanadu now has a long history of producing wines of distinction, regional classics and some of the most memorable vintages in Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. By the early 1980s it had already established a reputation as one of the finest wineries on Margaret River. A generous, robust Cabernet with firm, ripe tannin backbone and warm lingering finish.

Shiraz is a wine that Xanadu really does best. Their magnificent vineyards are situated within the most propitious mesoclimes, the growing conditions here are nothing short of an idyll. Xanadu's closely coddled vines love to yield harvests of the most succulent Shiraz, redolent of bright milled spice bouquets, supported by the firm palate structure that's essential of mighty Margaret River Shiraz. The finished wine is treated to the extravagance of fourteen months age over gross less in a selection of seasoned and new, French barriques and larger format oak vessels.

Xabregas are true terroirists, as the focus goes beyond the concept of new world wines. Xabregas don't adhere to the stereotype of an Australian style, choosing instead to bring the unique expression of their single vineyard estate to the fore. Vines were expertly planted to follow a strong line of alluvial iron based gravels that concentrate on the hill sides of each vineyard, reminiscent of the Rhone Valley's terraced slopes.

Xabregas manage the finest vineyards in the greater Mount Barker area. They are contract grows for Houghton, Howard Park and Forest Hill, the choicest parcels of Merlot and Cabernet however are retained and earmarked for their own label. It is the belief at Xabregas that the alchemy of vinification takes a back seat to the quality of fruit coming from their three estate vineyards. The growers and winemaking team work side by side to preserve the expression of terroir, achieving a wine with excellent colour, soft, beautifully integrated tannins and maximum fruit intensity.

An assemblage of Shiraz and Rousanne from the finest vineyards south of Mt. Barker, harvested throughout the cooler temperatures of early morning at closely timed passes amongst the vines to create a Syrah of structure and complexity. Each site contributes a uniqueness and influence adding a different personality to the final wine. An elegant, medium weighted Syrah with abundant spice and graceful tannins, co fermentation with portions of the Roussanne grape adds another layer of texture and depth to this emerging Mt Barker style.

The archetypal west coast Bordeaux style, a vibrant cepage of Cabernet and Merlot, Malbec and Franc, picked off the first vineyards ever planted to Margaret River. A component from the younger Woodlands Brook site contributes structure and aromatics. Woodlands remains an enigma, as the vineyard team place great trust in the quality of fruit, the finished wine can be both pretty and powerful. Vinified exclusively of Wilyabrup parcels, painstakingly hand sorted, berry by berry, the graceful tannins continue to soften, as the fruit begins to sing.

Very few vineyards yield the quality of fruit that merits vintaging into a statuesque wine dominated by the prettily fragrant Cabernet Franc. Woodlands were established from the ground up with a view to achieving limited harvests of the arcane Bordeaux varietals, only a few hundred cases of good red wine per vintage. There are now two estate vineyards, located within two kilometres of each other in Wilyabrup Valley, dry grown and farmed through traditionally organic techniques. The sanctity of soil yields a vividly varietal Cabernet Franc of finite peerage.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Franc. Woodlands have observed that some parcels of their vineyard produce aromatic ferments, while others are more structured. The finest pickings are treated to small open fermenters enhancing aromatics. Parcels showing greater structure are vinified in small closed fermenters. The best of both worlds, a Cabernet that retains vibrant aromatic fruit whilst gaining structure and adding weight. After a year in exclusively new French oak, the best barrels of vintage are determined and set aside for the final assemblage.

A stately accord of the most superior Margaret River fruit, offering great concentration while displaying an exemplary integration of tannins and oak. Woodlands Vineayard is bequeathed with plantings of elite Cabernet vines established 1973. Whilst much of their resplendent fruit finds its way into some of the better known estate flaghips of Margaret River, the pick of the crop is kept back and vinified under the Woodlands label. An assemblage of the best barrels Merlot and Malbec around a backbone of the finest Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Franc finally takes the lead, dominating the cépage at almost half the final blend, followed closely by Merlot, a tenth of Malbec and soupçon Verdot and Sauvignon. Emily is an emulation of the immensely satisfying Crus of Saint-Émilion, formulated at a time when Woodlands were selling all their Cabernet Sauvignon to other brands, all that remained were parcels of Merlot and Malbec, Verdot and Franc. Deep and brooding, cherries and dark chocolate, bay leaf, charcuterie, and vanillin oak, a luxurious velvet texture, rich, chewy tannins.

Clémentine is sourced entirely from Woodlands Brook Vineyard, established to Merlot and Malbec, Verdot and Franc, a superior northwest facing site on free draining Wilyabrup soils. A block of Cabernet vines were later added to a patch of auspicious heavy gravel clay soils, perfect for the realization of powerful Cabernet Sauvignon. Salinity, cocoa and clove, blood orange and river silt, the elegant palate brimming with ripe red fruits, a lovely mix of floral elements and winegum lozenge complexity, Clémentine lingers endlessly on a line of lively mineral acidity.

Cabernet with Merlot is the way of red wine from Margaret River. You'll hear some arguments from the Shiraz dudes but don't pay any attention. Vinified from fruit grown to the best sites, inaugural release was a winner at the London International. Add the plum and plush of Merlot to flesh out the opaque muscularity of Cabernet Sauvignon, Brad is hard to beat and this is pretty smart stuff. The wines of Wignall were met with resounding success from the first release, inaugural vintages saw amazing results, attracting conspicuous gold medal and trophy victories. Fruit driven and voluptuous to drink, Wignall have refined the style of their Albany Pinot Noir to be bliss for the most discerning palates. Vivacious aromatic fruit up front is solidly supported by velvetine tannins, dulcetly perfumed by the sweet, creamy French oak. An engaging nose of allsort and jube brings mouth filling flavours of fraise and framboise.

Deep scarlet colour. Bouquet of raspberries and blackcurrant, followed by sweet and spicy vanillan with hints of cigarbox and pencil from the new French oak. A currant and bramble, plum and cocoa flavoured palate, seasoned with fragrant oak spice and supported by lengthy, savoury tannins. Long memorable finish of fragrant blackberry cassis notes and refined, fresh acidity.

Two Steps is a wine of stately black fruit flavours and elegant spice character, crafted from parcels grown to mesoclimes which are being recognized the world over for the the sterling quality of Shiraz. The warm days of Mount Barker deliver a perfect measure of sunshine for optimal ripening, the chilly, often frosty nights, extend the growing season, developing flavours and tannins to the fullest. Restraint in the vinification achieves a highly articulate Shiraz of power, structure and grace, to mate alongside the finest gourmandise.

West Cape Howe began their journey with a respect for the land and a dedication to the welfare of the vine. No expense was spared in establishing a standard of viticulture worthy of the world's great terroirs. Today, their invaluable endowment of superior vineyards yields a quality of fruit which makes its own wine. Crafted with minimal human intervention, harvests from splendid sites along Frankland River and the Perth Hills, are assembled into an enchanting Tempranillo wine of exciting tension between savoury and sweet, stylishness and aplomb.

Frankland River is a region that's well known for the quality of its graceful Cabernet Merlot wines. West Cape Howe have spared no expense in acquiring some of the oldest established Frankland River vineyards. The finest harvests are treated to minimal intervention, for the realization of stately Cabernet Merlot wines. Hannan Hills is pure Frankland River, from estate properties which are closely managed to encourage strong vine development and achieve perfect yields of evenly ripened fruit, endowed with refined tannins and a concentration of flavour.

One of the things that West Cape Howe do best, is to find the perfect site for each varietal grape and style of wine. They are certainly fortunate to be based within Australia's largest and most propitious winegrowing region, but their viticultural team demonstrate an uncanny feel for matching the ideal mesoclime to every wine. Voyager are all about hard work in the vineyard rather than improving the quality of harvest through clever winemaking.
